FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CLARA, CA -- A new group of early childhood educators is preparing to make a difference in classrooms across Santa Clara County, thanks to the Santa Clara County Early Childhood Education Apprenticeship Program. Over the past 18 months, 25 dedicated students have worked toward earning their Associate Teacher permit while gaining valuable, paid experience in early learning settings.

This innovative program, a collaboration between Mission College, First 5 Santa Clara County, and ECEPTS (Early Care & Education Pathways to Success), was designed to remove barriers to entering the field of early childhood education. Through a combination of free college courses, hands-on training, and structured academic and professional support, participants have built a strong foundation for a career in early learning and care.

"This program is about more than just education—it’s about opening doors," said Pedro Sousa, Full Time Instructor in the Child Development Center at Mission College. "By eliminating financial barriers and offering direct classroom experience, we are providing a clear path for individuals who are passionate about working with young children but may not have had the means to pursue this career."

The graduates were recognized and celebrated at a ceremony on February 22 at Educare in San Jose.

Graduates of the Santa Clara County Early Childhood Education Apprenticeship Program are ready to make an impact in local classrooms after 18 months of hands-on training and coursework.

For many apprentices, the journey began with little or no formal training in early childhood education. Now, after completing coursework in child development, curriculum planning, and working with families, they are ready to step into professional roles in preschools, childcare centers, and family childcare homes. The program’s unique model allowed participants to take classes together as a cohort, receiving mentorship and tutoring while applying their new knowledge in real-world settings.

"The success of these apprentices is a win for the entire community," said Willy Kwong, Child Development Department Chair at Mission College. "When we invest in early childhood educators, we are investing in the future of our children, our families, and our economy. These graduates will play a critical role in shaping young minds and providing the foundation for lifelong learning."

The demand for qualified early childhood educators continues to grow, and programs like this are helping to strengthen the workforce. The apprenticeship is especially focused on increasing opportunities for women and people of color, providing equitable access to career pathways that lead to stable, well-paying jobs in education.

Graduates of the program not only earn their Associate Teacher permit but also secure a wage increase, positioning them for long-term success in the field. With a growing emphasis on high-quality early learning, employers are eager to hire educators who have received this level of training and hands-on experience.

The program provides free tuition and books, paid on-the-job training, and built-in academic support. To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old, available to work at least 20 hours per week, and able to take college courses on weekday evenings or Saturday mornings.

"Early childhood educators are the backbone of our communities," Sousa said. "This program is about more than just a credential—it’s about empowering individuals to pursue careers that make a meaningful impact."
