For Immediate Release

SANTA CLARA, CA - Mission College is excited to announce the launch of its Solar Suitcase STEM Camp, a hands-on summer program designed for high school juniors and seniors eager to explore the exciting and impactful world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

This program offers an enriching opportunity for students to dive deep into solar energy and experience how STEM knowledge can be applied to make a tangible difference in communities worldwide. The camp will be held from June 9 to June 12, 2025, at the Student Engagement Center (SEC), Rooms 204 & 205, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM each day.

The camp aims to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to STEM, featuring hands-on activities where they will learn about the power and potential of solar energy. Participants will design and assemble solar suitcases, which are portable solar power units that will be sent to underserved communities in developing countries. These solar suitcases will directly benefit medical and educational facilities by providing much-needed electricity in areas where access to power is limited or non-existent.
“At Mission College, we believe in the transformative power of education and the impact it can have on both individuals and communities. The Solar Suitcase STEM Camp is an opportunity for students to learn essential STEM skills while also contributing to solving real-world problems,” said Inez Barragan, HSI-STEM Director at Mission College. “Our goal is to empower these young minds to understand not only the importance of renewable energy but also the broader social and environmental challenges that can be addressed through innovation and collaboration.”

In addition to the hands-on solar suitcase project, students will have the chance to experience college life firsthand. Workshops on STEM education and career pathways, as well as campus tours, will give students valuable insights into what pursuing higher education at Mission College could look like. Students will also have the chance to network with faculty, peers, and industry professionals, opening doors for future mentorship and opportunities in STEM fields.

Mario Flores, Solar Suitcase Camp Coordinator, emphasized the unique nature of the camp: “This program is more than just an introduction to STEM. It’s about connecting knowledge with action. The solar suitcases our students build will directly impact communities in need, providing them with the energy necessary to sustain schools and medical clinics. It’s an empowering experience for students to know that the work they’re doing will have a lasting effect in places that need it most.”
The camp also aims to spark interest in solar energy and other renewable technologies, a rapidly growing field that has the potential to play a crucial role in addressing global energy challenges. Students will learn how these technologies can be implemented to solve real-world issues, from providing sustainable power to off-grid communities to creating job opportunities in the clean energy sector.

The Solar Suitcase STEM Camp is open to all high school juniors and seniors with an interest in STEM fields and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the world. With limited spots available, students are encouraged to register early to secure their place in this one-of-a-kind summer program.
