Mission College Wins 2024 Black English Success Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SANTA CLARA, CA -- Mission College has been honored as a 2024 Champion for Excellence in Placement, receiving the prestigious Black English Success Award from the Campaign for College Opportunity. This award celebrates Mission College’s exemplary work in advancing Black student success in transfer-level English, underscoring the college’s commitment to equity and academic achievement.
“Our faculty and staff at Mission College work tirelessly to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed, and this award reaffirms our commitment to equitable access and student success,” said Dr. Seher Awan, President of Mission College. “We are deeply honored to be recognized for our efforts to support our students and create a pathway for their academic and professional growth.”
The Black English Success Award acknowledges Mission College’s role in implementing California’s AB 705 legislation, which aimed to increase access to transfer-level coursework and eliminate barriers in community colleges. Since its passage in 2017, the law has spurred remarkable progress across California, with Mission College at the forefront of these advancements.
“Receiving the Black English Success Award is a testament to our faculty and staff’s commitment to equity in education," said Lorrie Ranck, Vice President of Instruction at Mission College. "We believe that every student deserves the resources and support needed to excel, and this recognition underscores the importance of our work to empower students and break down barriers.”
The Campaign for College Opportunity will recognize Mission College and fellow awardees during an Instagram Live event titled Excellence in Placement: Honoring Community Colleges Excelling in Equitable Course Placement for Students on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 12 PM. The celebration will showcase these achievements in equitable course placement and student support.
The Campaign for College Opportunity is dedicated to ensuring that all eligible and motivated students in California have the opportunity to pursue and succeed in higher education. Committed to upholding the state’s promise of college access for its youth, the Campaign seeks to strengthen California’s future by promoting inclusive policies and educational success for all.
"Our Umoja Program and the AB 1705 workgroup have been instrumental in advancing our commitment to student equity and success. Their dedication to fostering inclusive support structures for our students has had a profound impact, ensuring that each individual has the resources they need to thrive," said Dr. Omar Murillo, Vice President of Student Services. "This award is a testament to their hard work, and I am grateful for their unwavering efforts in making equitable education a reality at Mission College."
"Mission College is committed to the continuous enhancement of our academic offerings, fostering inclusivity and addressing diverse educational needs. This commitment aligns with the college’s mission to provide accessible education and support to a broad spectrum of learners, promoting empowerment through strong academics, knowledge, and skills," said Lorrie Ranck, Vice President of Instruction.
