FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SANTA CLARA, CA -- Mission College President Seher Awan's statement on recent political ads including former student Gabrielle Ludwig.

Mission College stands in resolute support of Gabrielle Ludwig, our former basketball player and student, and condemns the use of her image in recent political ads that perpetuate a divisive and harmful narrative. The actions taken by former President Trump and certain members of the Republican Party to vilify transgender rights represent not only a gross miscalculation of political integrity but also a reckless endorsement of discrimination and bigotry aimed at the very citizens they are sworn to protect.

By exploiting transgender individuals, including Gabrielle, in their political campaigns without consent, they intrude on personal lives, perpetuate misinformation, and put these individuals at risk of harassment and violence. This is a shameful tactic that risks inciting violence and harassment against those who are already marginalized. Let it be clear: we reject any form of rhetoric that dehumanizes our community members. This is not just a political issue; it is a matter of human dignity and respect.

Nearly a decade ago, Gabrielle joined our women’s basketball team, driven by her passion for athletics, demonstrating remarkable courage and integrity. Her participation, alongside with the unwavering support she received, embodies our college's commitment to nurturing an environment where all students can be their authentic selves and thrive.

Mission Stands Against Discrimination

Mission College vehemently opposes any action that marginalize individuals based on their identity. We are proud to stand against all forms of discrimination, and our institution is resolute in its commitment to being a safe haven where all students feel supported, loved, and cared for. We believe that diversity is not just a strength; it is the foundation of our campus, enriching our classrooms, and preparing our students for a world that upholds acceptance, humanity, and empathy.

At Mission College, equality, inclusivity, equity and social justice are not just principles—they are the driving force behind our daily actions in solidarity with all who strive for a just and respectful society. We honor the rich tapestry of experiences, perspectives, and identities that make Mission College a truly exceptional place to learn. We will fiercely fight for the rights of every member of our community, particularly in the face of prejudice and hatred. We stand in community with Gabrielle, her family, and all our LGBTQIA+ community members.

Gabrielle, along with all those targeted by these campaigns, embodies the courage that inspires our mission. We are committed to advocating for a society where hate has no place and where those who spread it are held accountable for their actions. Mission College will not stand idly by while hatred and discrimination flourish. We are steadfast in our opposition to any actions that marginalize individuals based on their identity. We urge our community to join us in rejecting any narrative that threatens our core values and to stand firmly against the hate that seeks to divide us.
