Dr. Kawasaki has enjoyed a fulfilling career that spans music, athletics, and nursing. She credits her initial career as a concert violinist with giving her an appreciation for large groups working together to create, improve, and perform. In athletics, Yuko holds a Master's Degree in Exercise Science which she hopes to utilize in the future. She is an avid badminton player and qualified for the 2017 World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. She continues to be involved in badminton through coaching para badminton players at all levels of competition, and managing Team USA when her schedule allows.
Yuko started her career in nursing as a Certified Nursing Assistant, followed by 2 years as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, and finally, a Registered Nurse. Her roundabout journey to becoming a Registered Nurse gives her an appreciation for her community college students trying to achieve their goals via baby steps, as well as students who are pursuing a second career. Her nursing career has included bedside work in Neurosurgery, ICU, Postpartum, and Labor & Delivery.
16 years ago, Yuko dipped her toes into teaching at a Regional Occupational Center, and followed her heart to a robust career at Mission College and El Camino College where she served as Assistant Director of the Registered Nursing program and on the Academic Senate. In 2021, Dr. Kawasaki returned to Mission College where she currently is the Dean of Health Occupations & Nursing. Her passion is improving access to nursing programs, with a concentration on demystifying the pathways in which a student becomes eligible for NA, VN, RN, and BSN programs.
