Maria D. Escobar, D.Ed., was born in Guatemala and immigrated to San Francisco as a young girl.  A first generation college student, she attended the University of San Francisco, USF, where she earned a BA in Psychology.  Upon graduating from USF, Dr. Escobar attended the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) on a full scholarship from the Graduate School while studying for her Master’s degree in Counselor Education with an emphasis on secondary school guidance and counseling.  As a doctoral student in Counselor Education at Penn State, she was the recipient of a Bilingual Education Fellowship from the US Department of Education.  Maria earned a doctorate in Counselor Education with an emphasis in program development, and administration.  Dr. Escobar was the only Latina in her graduate programs, in addition to being the youngest.  She graduated with her doctorate when she was 27.

Dr. Escobar has dedicated her career in the service of others.  Early in her career, she worked in the non-profit sector, and in the public-school system where she served as a middle school and high school counselor at her former high school.  Working in the community college system for over 20 years, she has served as an EOPS counselor, EOPS/CARE and CalWORKs director, CTE counselor, and most recently as the director of admissions and records, and financial aid.  She finds great satisfaction in providing access and opportunity to students, especially those whose paths are similar to hers.

Dr. Escobar lives in Daly City with her husband, their dog Disney, and enjoys spending time with her parents and her grandchildren, and traveling.
