Emeritus ESL Instructor to Hold Workshops Overseas

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Mission College faculty emeritus Marsha Chan was selected by the U.S. State Department to go to Thailand and Malaysia this month to provide professional develop training for ESL teachers in those countries. The trip includes an opening address at an international conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

Chan was a member of the ESL Department for over 30 years before her retirement in 2015. She has given over 300 presentations and/or workshops around the world. She also hosts a YouTube channel, The Pronunciation Doctor, which has 7300 subscribers.

“My passion for teaching and travel coalesces in opportunities to work with teachers and students from around the world,” said Chan.

Her trip will take her to universities and other cities in Thailand focusing on teachers who provide English instruction. In Malaysia she will conduct workshops first in Johor Bahru, in Peninsular Malaysia, and then across the China Sea to Kota Kinabalu, in East Malaysia on the northern part of the island of Borneo.

“It is my hope,” Chan expressed, “that the Thai and Malaysian teachers who participate in my training sessions gain greater awareness of current trends in academic learning in English language teaching and better understand how to enhance students' oral production skills, especially in the young adult/university academic context.”
